Setting: Tail end of 243 ADO. King William's kingdom, Enchanted Forest.
There were many good aspects to being declared a princess and the future queen of Genovia. One of the best things was finding some sense of stability. She had been in the forests for over a year, relying on an exchange of kindnesses between other wanderers, the locals and for a time, a specific man in the forest. As a princess in Genovia, she didn’t want for anything and truly had more than she could ever need. There was some childish part of her that couldn’t help but love it, with the beautiful dresses, the jewels, and being treated like a princess. So many girls dreamed of it when they were young; to have it come true was strange and wonderful all at the same time. Perhaps that was why she continued to go through the motions, even when she didn’t find much charm in the prince himself. She kept hoping that something between them would spark, that she could forget about others and be with someone who was offering everything instead of nothing. It was selfish of her, she supposed, but at the same time, the Genovia royalty wanted the marriage to happen so badly and she wanted to make that true for them.
Often the benefits seemed shadowed by the cons. It was a huge responsibility to be a princess and even more of one to be a queen; she didn’t know if she was cut out for it. Actually, she was rather certain that it wasn’t a role meant for her. Perhaps that’s why she was only named one due to a misunderstanding rather than born one. She had found where she belonged nearly seven months ago. A small cottage in the woods with a little girl and a man who was difficult to get close to. Only it hadn’t been where she belonged because he hadn’t wanted her and that was part of why she got swept up in the mess that she was currently in. It was something she thought about often, that kept her up at nights and distracted her from reading and it was so painfully obvious in situations such as this one, meeting the neighboring kingdom and their royals.
The two kingdoms were similar in size and stature, not nearly as powerful as the kingdom of Amare but with their own small realm that was devoted to them. The princess and prince of this kingdom were newly married and Winnie had heard some strange things about what they went through before that happened. The princess had been turned into some kind of animal- some said a wolf, others said a monkey and others yet said many other kinds of animals. Whatever it was, Winnie thought the Princess Odette was beautiful and seemed much more like a princess than she did, as she stumbled over her own greeting and sloppily fell into a curtsy. She had grown up on a farm and was still learning what princesses usually had their whole life to learn. Her struggle to hold in her anxiety made it difficult to remember and perform the mannerisms she had learned, but she was doing her best and she was sure she hadn’t made any major blunder. After the greetings, Prince Herbert patted her head and gave her a light kiss on the forehead, so at least she wasn’t given the cold shoulder.
Winnie was well aware that she was supposed to be social at this kind of event but the only way she was able to keep herself together was to keep herself from getting too involved and drawn in. After a dance or two and some small talk with the prince, she found herself lingering near the outside of the groups, trying to remain unseen and unnoticed. She would never be able to be a princess or a queen, because she couldn’t handle these social situations. There were too many people and it was too small a space. She felt closed in. Winnie stumbled towards one of the tapestries, finding an open doorway behind it. She slipped inside and sunk against the wall. It was smaller than the ballroom but there wasn’t anybody inside, meaning she felt a bit better but also she could have her panic attack in private. Her shoulders heaved as she gasped out for breath, but she couldn’t help but draw into herself further, pulling her knees to her chest and squeezing them tightly. She didn’t realize when someone else entered, too involved in her panic attack, trying to disappear and draw herself out of it at the same time, but as usual it was useless and her body quivered against the wall.
